Veyipadagalu
The village of Subbannapeta is followed across three centuries, from the founder who turned up treasure to the households that hold its two temples, its Sanskrit learning and its fields together as colonial courts, English schooling and the confidence of the reformers arrive. The thousand-hooded serpent of the title is the deity of the place, and its hoods go one at a time as the village's commitment to its own institutions thins. Viswanatha wrote the traditionalist's answer to his age, and the result is still the most argued-over novel in modern Telugu.
