Cloud Nine
The first act is a British colonial station in Victorian Africa where the wife is played by a man, the Black servant by a white actor and the daughter by a dummy, each of them performing what Clive requires them to be. The second moves to a London park in 1979 with the same characters twenty-five years older, negotiating divorce, lesbian motherhood and a far less certain kind of authority. Made with Joint Stock out of a workshop on sexual politics, it was the play that carried Churchill to New York.
