Blue Heart
In the first of the two pieces a family lays the table for a daughter flying in from Australia and keeps starting the scene over, losing a line, gaining a gunman, gaining ten children who run through the kitchen and out again. In the second a man in his forties presents himself to a series of elderly women as the son each of them gave up, while the words blue and kettle work into the dialogue and begin eating it. Written for Out of Joint, it is Churchill's most direct attack on the machinery of the well-made play.
