The Skriker

Caryl Churchill · 1994 CE · Play · English · Contemporary

A damaged shapeshifter out of northern English folklore fixes on two young women, Josie in a secure hospital for killing her baby and Lily who is expecting one, and follows them through London as an old woman on a bench, a child, an American, a sofa. Her speech comes apart as she goes, each word calling up the next by sound, and behind her move a Black Dog, a Kelpie, a Bogle and the rest of an underworld she keeps offering to take them down to. Written for the National Theatre with dancers and music, it is the strangest thing Churchill has put on a stage.
