Hope is the thing with feathers

Emily Dickinson · 1891 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Victorian

The thing with feathers perches in the soul, sings the tune without the words and never stops at all, and it is sweetest heard in the gale; it would take a storm sore indeed to abash the little bird that has kept so many warm. Hope has been heard in the chillest land and on the strangest sea, and never once asked a crumb. Titled and regularized by Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson for the second posthumous series.
