I felt a Funeral, in my Brain

Emily Dickinson · 1896 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Victorian

Mourners tread to and fro inside the speaker's head until sense seems to be breaking through, and when they are all seated a service beats like a drum until the mind goes numb. A box is lifted and creaks across her soul with those same boots of lead, then space begins to toll, all heaven is a bell and being is only an ear. Held back from the first two posthumous selections and printed in the third.
