Tell all the truth but tell it slant

Emily Dickinson · 1945 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Victorian

Truth must be told slant, because success in circuit lies and our infirm delight cannot bear its superb surprise; the model given is the way lightning is explained to children with kind words so that they are not frightened. Eight lines rest on that one analogy, which doubles as a statement of method. It reached print only in Bolts of Melody, the selection Millicent Todd Bingham made from her mother's papers.
