India Song
Disembodied voices who only half remember an old scandal talk over a French embassy in 1930s Calcutta, while the ambassador's wife and the men around her move through the reception rooms without speaking their own lines. The disgraced vice-consul cries out from the garden and is refused. Written at the National Theatre's request out of the material of Duras's Calcutta books, and built so that the speaking and the seen never quite meet.
