The North China Lover
The Mekong crossing, the black limousine and the room in the Chinese quarter come back, set down this time by a narrator who writes in camera directions and speaks of the girl in the third person. The lover is given back his northern origin, the younger brother is given more room, and the child is given more of what she wanted. Duras wrote it in her late seventies on learning that her Goncourt book was being filmed by someone else.
