Moderato Cantabile

Marguerite Duras · 1958 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

In a French provincial port a factory director's wife takes her small son to his weekly piano lesson and hears a woman shot in the cafe below by the man who loved her. Over the days that follow she keeps going back to that cafe to drink wine with a workman from her husband's plant, and the two talk their way through what the dead couple might have said. The book in which Duras pared her manner down to repetition, refusal and what is left unsaid.
