The Ravishing of Lol Stein

Marguerite Duras · 1964 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

At a seaside casino ball a girl of nineteen watches her fiance cross the room to an older woman and leave with her, and she stays at the rail until the musicians pack up. Ten years on, married and back in the same town, she begins following a couple through the streets and arranging herself into the space between them. Lacan wrote an essay on it, and it opens the sequence of books Duras built around one recurring set of figures.
