Jerusalem

William Blake · 1820 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

Albion, the giant who is also England, turns away from his own divine humanity and hides inside a moral law of his own making, and his emanation Jerusalem is driven out into the wilderness. Los keeps his furnaces going across a hundred plates, building a city of art in the middle of the fall and refusing to become the thing he is fighting. Blake's longest illuminated book was etched over sixteen years and sold complete in colour to nobody in his lifetime.
