Songs of Innocence and of Experience

William Blake · 1794 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

A piper's world of lambs, green fields and small children is set against the same figures met a second time in a London of chimney-sweeps, charity schools and a chapel with its doors shut — one voice, twice, the second time knowing what it costs. Blake etched, printed and colored every copy by hand, so no two agree and the pictures argue with the words on the plate. Read as nursery verse for a century, the paired sets are now the founding text of English Romantic symbolism.
