Visions of the Daughters of Albion
Oothoon crosses the Atlantic toward the lover she has chosen and is seized on the way by Bromion, who brands her and claims her as property. The three of them end fixed at the mouth of a cave — the rapist justified, the lover silent and jealous, and the woman talking, for most of the poem, about what chastity and ownership actually cost. Written in the year of the Terror, with slavery, marriage law and colonial trade all standing behind the same argument.
