Philoctetes
Ten years after the fleet marooned him on Lemnos with a snakebite that would not heal, the archer who carries the bow of Heracles is still alive on the island, and an oracle now says Troy cannot fall without him. Odysseus brings the young son of Achilles to take the bow by a lie, and the boy has to price what the deception costs him. A late work built for three speaking parts and no woman on stage, and Sophocles' study of a man the army discarded and then found it needed.
