Electra

Sophocles · c. 410 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

Years after Agamemnon's murder his daughter keeps up an open, unending mourning inside the palace her mother and Aegisthus now hold, refusing the compromises her sister Chrysothemis has made in order to live quietly. Word then arrives that Orestes has died in a chariot crash at Delphi, and a stranger carries home an urn said to hold his ashes. Sophocles narrows the Oresteia's civic argument down to one woman's endurance, and offers neither Furies nor a court to settle it.
