Ajax

Sophocles · c. 445 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

Passed over when the armour of Achilles is awarded to Odysseus, the best fighter left at Troy goes out at night to kill the Greek commanders, and Athena turns his hand against the army's cattle instead. He wakes among the carcasses to the laughter of the camp, and his captive wife Tecmessa and his sailors watch him reckon what a man of his standing can do with such shame. Generally taken as the earliest surviving Sophocles, and the play that puts the heroic code of the Iliad on trial in a man the army no longer wants.
