Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Céline Sciamma · 2019 CE · Film · French · Contemporary

A painter is rowed to a Breton island in the 1770s to make a marriage portrait of a young woman who has refused to sit, and must study her on walks by day and work from memory at night. With the mother away and a maid the only other company, the house empties out and the looking starts running both ways. Sciamma's anatomy of the gaze between painter and sitter entered the 2022 Sight and Sound poll at thirtieth, the highest placing of any film directed by a woman apart from Jeanne Dielman.
