Tam o' Shanter

Robert Burns · 1791 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

Market day in Ayr runs long, and a farmer sits drinking with the souter while his wife nurses her wrath at home exactly as she had warned him she would. Riding back through a night of thunder past the ford, the cairn and the thorn above the well, he comes on Alloway's ruined kirk lit from within, with the Devil at the pipes, a floor of dancing witches and one young one in a shift too short for her. Written in a day for Francis Grose, to accompany a plate of the kirk in his Antiquities of Scotland.
