The Cotter's Saturday Night
November wind drives a ploughman home from his week in the field to a clay cottage where the younger children run out to meet him and the elder ones come back from service with their wages in hand. Supper is porridge and the cheese kept from the last harvest, a daughter's young man is brought in and looked over, and the father then takes down the big ha'-Bible to lead the family worship. Burns modelled it on Fergusson's Farmer's Ingle and dedicated it to Robert Aiken; for a century it was the poem by which respectable Scotland forgave him everything else.
