The Kalevala

Elias Lönnrot (comp.) · 1835 CE · Poem · Nordic · Romantic

Compiled by a country doctor from oral songs collected across Finnish Karelia, and published in the form that gave a nation its literature. The verses follow the old singer Väinämöinen, the smith Ilmarinen and the reckless Lemminkäinen as they court the daughters of the north and contend for the Sampo, a mill that grinds out endless plenty. Sorcery here is done by singing, and the better singer wins.
