E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
A boy in a California housing tract finds something living in the tool shed, lures it inside with sweets and hides it among the stuffed toys in his closet, telling only his brother and sister. The creature learns to speak from television, builds a transmitter out of junk, and the boy starts to feel what it feels. Spielberg made the highest-grossing picture in the world to that point out of divorce and suburbia.
