Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Steven Spielberg · 1989 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

When his estranged father — a medievalist who has spent his life on the Grail legend — vanishes on the trail of the cup of Christ, the archaeologist follows the old man's notebook from Venice's flooded crypts into Nazi-occupied Austria, racing Berlin for a relic that grants eternal life. The father, played as a fussy scholar to the son's brawler, turns the treasure hunt into a two-hander about approval withheld. Spielberg framed it as an apology for the preceding film's darkness, and the pairing of Ford with Sean Connery restored the serial's lightness while giving the trilogy its warmest register.
