Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Steven Spielberg · 1984 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

A Shanghai nightclub deal gone wrong in 1935 drops the archaeologist, a lounge singer and a twelve-year-old pickpocket into rural India, where a starving village begs them to recover its sacred stone — and its children — from a cult reborn in the catacombs beneath a maharajah's palace. The serial matinee machinery of the first film is turned toward the macabre: sacrificial pits, enslaved children, a heart pulled beating from a chest. Its darkness, with Gremlins the same summer, pushed the American ratings board to invent PG-13.
