The Color Purple

Alice Walker · 1982 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Celie is fourteen, pregnant by the man she calls father, and writes to God because she has been told to tell nobody else. She is married off to a widower who wants a field hand, her sister Nettie is driven off the property, and years later the blues singer Shug Avery arrives at the house sick. Walker took the Pulitzer and the National Book Award for it, drawing on the Zora Neale Hurston she had spent the previous decade recovering.
