The Temple of My Familiar

Alice Walker · 1989 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Suwelo inherits his uncle's house in Baltimore and sits listening to two old people, Miss Lissie and Mr Hal, while his marriage to Fanny comes apart at a distance. Lissie remembers her previous lives in order: as a woman in Africa before the slavers, as a lion, once as a white man. Walker subtitled it a romance and ran the story across continents and millennia, picking up characters from her earlier books.
