A Lie of the Mind

Sam Shepard · 1985 CE · Play · Modern / American · Contemporary

Jake telephones his brother from a roadside booth certain that he has beaten his wife to death, and two households a continent apart take in what is left of the marriage. Beth is alive with her speech and memory damaged, back among the family she married away from, and the brother sent north to find out what happened cannot get himself out of their house again. Shepard's longest play, staged in New York with Harvey Keitel and Geraldine Page, and the fullest version of the split family he had been writing for a decade.
