The Lost Weekend

Billy Wilder · 1945 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

Don Birnam, a writer who has published nothing, gets his brother and his girl out of town for the weekend and goes looking for the bottles he has hidden around the apartment. Four days of pawnshops, a Third Avenue bar and an alcoholic ward follow, a theremin rising whenever the craving takes hold. The liquor trade is said to have offered Paramount millions to burn the negative; it took Best Picture instead.
